How to Choose the Right Online Course

Tips to Make the Right Choice

Online study is a great option for busy people who recognise the importance of further education for their career success. But with hundreds of institutions offering a huge selection of courses, choosing the right online course can be pretty tricky.

Here are 4 questions to think about when you're choosing an online course.

  1. Why do I want to study?
  2. Do the course and college have good reputations?
  3. What about materials, assessment and support?
  4. What are the costs of online study?

1. Why do I want to study?

Knowing what you want to get out of your online study can help you work out which course is right for you.

Starting out in your career: studying online gives you the flexibility to work and earn money while skilling up for the job of your dreams.

SEEK Learning has a great selection of entry-level certificate courses to get you started.

Learn advanced skills: postgraduate courses or advanced diplomas provide more in-depth knowledge and skills, and show that you're serious about your chosen career.

Time for a career change: online study allows you to gain a deeper understanding of your new profession while you keep working and jobseeking.

If you've been in the workforce for a while, a diploma or advanced diploma is an ideal qualification.

Step up to a leadership position: online study lets you update your qualifications, and fits in with work, family and lifestyle commitments.

A degree or postgraduate degree is one of the most practical, professionally recognised qualifications you can gain - and can help you earn that promotion you're after.

2. Do the course and college have good reputations?

Courses taught by reputable education providers mean you'll end up with quality education.

There are several Australian accreditations that assure you of course and teaching quality. For instance, only registered training organisations (RTOs) provide nationally recognised qualifications. For information on accreditation standards and terms such as RTO, Higher Education Provider and AQF, see our article on accreditations explained.

You can do your own research, too, to ensure a course will be highly regarded by employers:

  • Check job ads in your sector and see whether there are specific qualifications that employers are looking for.
  • Ask people who work in your chosen industry whether the course you're considering is known and well regarded.

All SEEK Learning education providers are chosen on the basis of quality and reputation, so you're assured of a recognised, respected qualification.

3. What about materials, assessment and support?

Understanding exactly what the course provides will help you decide whether it's the right online course for you.

  • Ensure that the materials are delivered in a way that is familiar and convenient for you.
  • Find out about assessment requirements up-front.
    • Are there any contact hours or events?
    • Do you need to be available at specific times?
    • Will you need to interact with staff and other students?
  • Understand the academic support facilities available, including:
    • access to a tutor
    • access to online resources and libraries
    • peer support in the form of workgroups, social media groups and even in-the-flesh meetings

4. What are the costs of online study?

When choosing an online course, make sure you understand up-front and ongoing costs:

  • Fees
  • Text books
  • Other course materials
  • Any travel for contact sessions

Most Australian citizens qualify for government assistance that helps cover the costs of study.

  • FEE-HELP covers most or all of the costs associated with study.
    • This government loan covers undergraduate, postgraduate and approved vocational education and training (VET) courses.
    • Loan repayments commence when your income reaches a certain level.
  • Most SEEK Learning courses are Austudy, Abstudy and Youth Allowance approved, meaning you may receive fortnightly allowances from Centrelink if you're a full-time student.
  • SEEK Learning can arrange study loans for students who don't qualify for government assistance. Loans are interest-free for the first year, and are available to approved applicants.
